Production of 'Rudolph' to brighten up opera house stage

Let the reindeer games begin with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” this holiday season. Join Rudolph and his reindeer friends, along with Santa and Mrs. Claus for a live stage performance at the Lancaster Opera House.

The play is written by Kevin Oakes, produced by the Lancaster Opera House, and directed by Lancaster Opera House’s Technical Director Kirkland Gilmer. This timeless tale only comes to the opera house once a year and is a wonderful way to get into the spirit of Christmas with your family.

The performance dates for “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” are: 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16; 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17 and 18; 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 20, and 21.

“It is the perfect Christmas show for the young at heart. I just love this show. It captures the whole spirit of Christmas and it is the time of the year that people are looking for family things to do. This is the pure, fun side of Christmas,” remarked Gilmer, who has directed the show for about the last seven years.

David Bondrow, the Lancaster Opera House artistic director, said Rudolph has become a holiday tradition for many families. It is also a very interactive show where children get to learn the “Reindeer Stomp,” help the elves with the presents, as well as sing and dance throughout the show.

“There are new generations of children and past generations that continue to want to see it. It is a great introduction to theater for kids,” remarked Lancaster Opera House Executive Director David Fillenwarth.

This year’s cast includes: Dan Barone, Mary Barrett, Alec Blunt, Maria Droz, Krissy Golab, Zach Haumiester, Elaine Heckler, Courtney Hoerner, Jim Kaney, Melissa Kate, Sean Murphy, Jamie Nablo, Bill Steffan, Don Suarez, Katie Vantressca, and Darren Wojicki.

Heckler, who is also the costume designer for Rudolph and the front of the house manager for the opera house, is playing Mrs. Claus for the fourth time in a row. In her second year, she had brought a new flair to the production as she personalized the reindeer’s costumes, such as forming Cupid’s antlers into a heart.

“The first time we did Rudolph we just had plain, brown reindeer costumes. These reindeers have personalities, I thought,” remarked Heckler.

Last year, she changed all the elves costumes and this year the reindeer costumes will be refreshed, said Bondrow.

“The show is the best ever. I love the interaction with the children. It is surprising how many of them want to talk to Mrs. Claus and not Santa. I am shocked,” commented Heckler. “There is nothing more magical than seeing a little kid look up at you like your Mrs. Claus.”

Heckler said they have a recurring cast and they are all excited once again to perform the show. Also, some of the cast members, who have moved away, come home just to do this show.

“The cast has become almost like a little family. The cast loves doing it and there is actually a waiting list to perform in this show. People see how much fun it is and they want to be involved,” said Heckler.

Holiday cut out cookies from Chrusciki Bakery will be sold during the performance and at the end of the show, the cast will meet and greet with children, but due to Santa’s extremely busy schedule this time of year he will have to leave after the show.

“This show is for anyone who believes in the spirit of Christmas,” commented Gilmer.

Tickets are $16 for adults and seniors and $13 for children 12 and under. The Lancaster Opera House Box Office is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before curtain on show nights. The Lancaster Opera House is located on the second floor of the Lancaster Town Hall, 21 Central Ave., Lancaster. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 683-1776 or on the Web at www.LancOpera.org.

Some of the very first snowflakes of the holiday season were expected to fly across the Clarksville area Monday and today, but little if any accumulation is expected — this time.

While little more than a trace of the white stuff is anticipated on grassy areas this morning, it does serve as a wake-up call that winter — with all of the weather-related travel considerations it brings — is drawing near once again.

This early-week rain/snow mix is caused by a somewhat-unusual alignment of weather conditions for late-November, according to Trevor Boucher, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville.

"There is a very deep, closed low pressure system that's situated further south than normal for this time of year, giving us wrap-around colder air," Boucher said.

Little in the way of measurable snow is expected in Clarksville from this weather-maker, but areas of southern Middle Tennessee, into West Tennessee, could see as much as 5 inches by tonight.

"The Clarksville area is far enough north that not much snow accululation is expected. It will be a mixture of precipitation, but more rain than snow for Clarksville," Boucher said. "It's possible that you'll get a trace of snow accumulation on the grass and cartops, but there is very little chance of much more than that for your area."

Today's high temperature is predicted to be 39 degrees, with an overnight low of 30.

Then, it warms up a bit heading into Wednesday, the final day of November. Sunshine is expected Wednesday with a high of 47 and overnight low of 25.

The first day of December will be ushered in with sunny skies and a high of 52 degrees and low Thursday night of 29.

Looking ahead to the Christmas parade weekend across Clarksville and other areas of northern Middle Tennessee, partly cloudy skies are expected Saturday, and maybe some rain showers Sunday, with highs in the low 50s and lows around 30.

Talk of snow and ice — which we could see in abundance this winter if the long-range outlook holds true — brings to mind school closings and other alterations in scheduling. On Monday, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System released its own preparatory statement about winter weather preparations:

Police in helmets and face shields with batons drawn blocked a downtown intersection near City Hall early Monday morning, blocking a group of Occupy L.A. protesters who had swarmed onto the street and vowed to stand their ground.

Some in the group began chanting "Back to the park!" an imperative many of the protesters seemed to follow.

So went the first hour after a deadline to clear the park outside City Hall passed as thousounds of Occupy L.A. supporters converged on the site where protesters have been camping for seven weeks.

The encampment is across the street from LAPD headquarters. The department was on tactical alert after the midnight deadline for protesters to get out of the park had passed.

Deputy Chief Jose Perez confirmed the tactical alert, which means that officers currently on duty are held over until they are released and police do not respond to low-priority radio calls.

Hundreds of protesters and supporters gathered at the Occupy L.A. site on the lawn of City Hall on Monday morning after the midnight deadline to clear out had come and gone, but no arrestes had been made.

Emilio Arreola, 25, of Long Beach, said he has been camping at City Hall Park since the demonstration began seven weeks ago. He said people are tired of what they see as economic injustice on Wall Street.

Arreola said he had already packed his tent in his car because he feared police might destroy it. He said he was skeptical about the possibility of mass arrests.

The Taser is touted for saving lives and preventing injury, but a new study says that some police officers reach for the weapon too quickly. David Martin reports.

The Taser sounds like the perfect law enforcement tool. Simple, effective and generally safe, it allows officers to subdue a suspect using electricity rather than resorting to blunt or deadly force. But a recent study found that some officers may be too quick to use the popular stun guns when conventional procedures would suffice. As David Martin reports, there's growing concern that Tasers may be inflicting unnecessary pain and, in rare cases, lead to death.

The hottest thing in police work these days is the Taser, a device which sends painful jolts of electricity into the human body, throwing muscles into uncontrollable spasms. Police see it as a whole new way of controlling people without injuring either themselves or the suspect.

Frequently the mere sight of a Taser will convince a criminal to give up without a fight. It is so effective police are sometimes too quick to use it, subjecting people to excruciating pain for no good reason. Some have even died after being hit by a Taser.

Whatever you think of Taser after watching this story you better get used to it. Taser is now used by more than 16,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. It all started when two brothers - Rick and Tom Smith - founded TASER International and set out to corner the stun gun market.

Tom Smith: We believe in what we're doing. We have changed the world. Very few people can say that.

By Tom Smith's count more than 500,000 law enforcement officers in the United States now carry Tasers. He and his brother Rick have taken what began as a backyard experiment and built it into a policeman's weapon of choice - a device which uses electricity to subdue unruly suspects without having to resort to the blunt force of a billy club or the deadly force of a firearm.

Rick Smith: The idea of using electricity to incapacitate at its core is, frankly, a beautiful and simplistic idea. That rather than causing death or injury to someone, if we can just temporarily take away control of their body and get them under control, it's about as nonviolent as you could get.

The Taser uses compressed gas to fire two small darts - attached to copper wires. When they pierce the skin, the electric current flows through the body seizing up the muscles and sending the suspect crashing to the ground screaming in pain.

Geoffrey Alpert: This is a whole new device. It's a whole new way to control people.

Geoffrey Alpert has written what to-date is the definitive study of Taser use for the National Institute of Justice.

Alpert: When used properly, a Taser is a very effective tool in law enforcement.

David Martin: Well, then I guess the question is, do police use a Taser properly?

Alpert: Well, that's the million dollar question.

Alpert's study found instances of what he calls "lazy cop syndrome" - using the Taser instead of proper police procedures.

Martin: So, Taser is now the go-to weapon?

Alpert: Yes sir, we see very often that Taser is the, is what officers turn to very quickly now in an encounter.

Martin: Are they using them too quickly?

Alpert: Some are. Some are using them way too fast.

One of the police departments Alpert studied was Austin, Texas where a police officer was suspended for three days after this traffic stop.

Kasasi "Kasus Ipad" Cuma Pancing Perang Baru

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Jaksa penuntut umum dalam kasus sertifikasi Ipad mengajukan kasasi atas putusan bebas yang diterima Randy Lester Samusamu dan Dian Yudha Negara. Menanggapi hal itu, kuasa hukum Randy dan Dian, Virza Roy Hizzal, menyatakan bahwa jaksa penuntut hanya memancing perang baru.

"Kasasi tersebut hanya memancing perang baru kasus Ipad di Indonesia, dan bisa-bisa melebar ke arah penolakan Ipad di Indonesia," tulis Roy dalam pesan singkatnya di Jakarta, Selasa (8/11/2011).

Randy dan Dian tersandung masalah penjualan Ipad tanpa buku manual berbahasa Indonesia. Dalam sidang di Pengadilan Negeri Jakarta Pusat, Selasa (25/10/2011), dua pekan lalu, keduanya divonis bebas dari dakwaan jaksa penuntut.

Perang baru yang dimaksud Roy adalah perdebatan seputar pengertian Ipad yang belum tercakup dalam barang telematika yang sebutkan dalam Pasal 8 Ayat (1) huruf J UU Nomor 8 Tahun 1999. Perdebatan tersebut sempat menjadi tema diskusi publik.

Perang baru, lanjut Roy, juga terkait persaingan global antara Apple dan Samsung yang sedang terjadi di Asia, Amerika, dan Eropa. "Bisa-bisa masalah ini masuk juga ke Indonesia dan dimanfaatkan kaum pemodal dan oknum tertentu," urai Roy.

Ia juga menegaskan, pengajuan kasasi oleh jaksa layak dipertimbangkan lantaran legalitas kasasi putusan bebas atas kasus Ipad sedang diujimaterikan di Mahkamah Konstitusi. "Jika pengujian itu dikabulkan, maka kasasi jaksa pada kasus Ipad yang sedang berjalan harus dinyatakan dicabut atau batal," ungkap Roy.

Atas pertimbangan tersebut, ia meminta pihak jaksa untuk legawa dalam menerima putusan bebas hakim yang diterima Randy dan Dian. Jaksa, kata Roy, tidak perlu mengikuti ego karena telah salah dalam penerapan hukum.
